Rules For Gifts
Gifts – presents
Lets review the definition of a gift before drawing up some rules: A gift or present is the transfer of something, without the need for compensation that is involved in trade. A gift is a voluntary act, which does not require anything in return.
My Simple & Smart Rules on Gifts
Always keep in mind that a gift should be all about a thought and a gesture and NOT to show someone up or impress them with the monetary value of your gift.
Your gift should always be within you own means. You should NEVER max out your credit card or take out a loan to buy someone a gift.
Just because you received a valuable gift from someone does not mean that you are compelled to match the monetary value of your reciprocal gift, especially if you cannot afford it. Remember everyone’s financial situation is different.
When you receive a gift from someone that is of no use to you or you just don’t like it, whatever you do, do NOT give it away to someone else just to simply get it out of your sight. My advice is to put that product away somewhere safe and the chances are you will have a perfect opportunity or a special occasion in the future to give it as a gift to someone appropriate, saving you money and time from going out shopping for a gift.
Do not feel bad or apologetic about recycling gifts, as long as they are brand new and in their original packaging. Of course, there is no reason to tell the recipient that you are recycling a gift.
Buy your gifts ahead of time if you can. Keep your eyes open for great bargains during the summer and winter sales especially if they can make great gifts for forthcoming birthdays, graduation and anniversary presents, and, of course, Christmas presents.
Whenever possible, keep your gifts simple. Put them together yourself if you can, such as a fruit basket or a toiletry bag. Alternatively, cook something simple, tasty and healthy, such as homemde cashew candies. A small potted plant always makes a nice gift.
