Why Women Should Focus on Strength Training

Many women often steer away from strength training workouts because they have the idea that it will cause them to look big and bulky. They frequently focus on cardio assuming that this is the best way to burn fat and maintain their feminine figure. However, most women don’t realize that strength training is actually the most efficient way to build lean muscle and lose fat at fast pace. Strength training is known for increasing resting metabolism, allowing you to burn more calories and fat from just sitting, leading to many more beneficial factors.

Strength training is well known for stimulating the body to release hormones and endorphins. The body releasing testosterone allows you to build and maintain muscle mass and bone density. While this may seem intimidating to women, this hormone actually serves as a balancing feature by simultaneously lowering estrogen levels which can lower risks of breast cancer. Also, while the release of endorphins is usually associated with exercise in general, strength training specifically triggers these endorphins to act as analgesics that reduce your perception of pain and increase positive feelings. The transmission of endorphins in strength training is also directly related to feelings of self-confidence, allowing you to learn new exercises that may have seemed challenging a few months ago and feel proud and confident, boosting your self-esteem.

In the process of aging, our bodies naturally lose muscle tissue which is known as sarcopenia. At around the age of 30, our bodies start losing 3 to 5 percent of lean muscle mass per year. Strength training can reverse sarcopenia and maintain muscle mass rather than lose it, keeping you young. These exercises can also benefit balance, posture, and coordination which will positively impact you for the rest of your life!

While strength training can seem intimidating to women, it is important to focus on all of the different benefits that this type of exercise has to offer. Strength training is the best way to increase your metabolism, build lean muscle, lose fat, and prevent aging all at once. It can also increase your self-confidence and manage stress. In addition, while strength training can be physically and mentally exhausting, this allows you to improve your sleep. It may be easier to just focus on cardio for your workout, but strength training is a great exercise method that should not be avoided. Even if you can’t afford a personal trainer to guide you through these workouts, there are many different videos online that can help you through the process of strength training.
