Most men tend to exaggerate their height and tell people they are taller than they are. Why is that? Do you feel insecure about your height? Do you desire to be taller? Well, our society valorizes the tall as if they are superior beings compared to shorter people. As a result, being tall has many advantages. For example, the taller you are, the more likely you are to continue onto higher education, like college. Also, being tall is associated with success in your career path. A person who is 6 feet tall is likely to earn about $166,000 more over a 30-year career than someone who is five foot four. Additionally, the taller you are, the more romance you are likely to have in your life. Taller adults date more than shorter adults, as well as tall men being more likely to find a long-term partner than shorter men.

Height is associated with several physiological benefits. Height is linked to greater happiness and self-esteem. Also, taller men are less likely to commit suicide. Overall, these perceptions of height of men stems from the unfair association of height with power. Height is taken as an indicator of leadership abilities. Therefore, we look up to taller people who we consider superior; meanwhile, we look down on shorter people as being inferior. For example, a United States presidential candidate who is tall is more likely to win the popular vote and have a better chance of being re-elected than his shorter peer.

Because of the association of height and power, there is also a paranoia around men and their height. Psychologically, shorter men view themselves more negatively, reducing their self-esteem and triggering a sense of vulnerability. Therefore, height plays a major part in paranoia in men.

How to Influence Other People’s Perceptions to Make Yourself Appear Taller

So, don’t give up hope if you’re on the shorter side! The mind is a very powerful tool and it can be easily deceived. Through creating optical illusions with appropriate clothing, men can make themselves appear taller, giving themselves an extra few inches in the minds of others. As written in a previous article (20 STYLE RULES THAT WILL HELP ANYONE LOOK TALLER), here are 12 clothing tips to help men appear taller:

  1. Wearing a skinnier tie will draw the eye up and down the body, making you seem taller than you are.
  2. Dressing monochromatically, and wearing one color family all over, will make you appear taller by avoiding breaking the body lines.
  3. However, skip on an all-black look. Black has the tendency of shrinking you down and making you appear smaller than you are.
  4. When buying a jacket, consider buying one on the shorter side since it will give the optical illusion of a longer torso and leg.
  5. As well, you should buy shorter shirts since this will add more balance to your body and keep your proportions in check. Too long of a shirt will make you look like you’re wearing the wrong size or someone else's clothes.
  6. Horizontal stripes are a no-go when trying to appear taller. Horizontal stripes make you appear wider than you are and is unflattering overall.
  7. Keeping the waist button on your jacket above your navel will give the illusion of a longer torso and legs.
  8. Avoid vest since they can make you look shorter by drawing attention to the middle section of your body, away from the overall long lines of your frame.
  9. As well, avoid belts since the break up the body lines and silhouette of your outfit.
  10. V-neck shirts elongate the neck and give the illusion of length, making you appear taller.
  11. Try wearing your pants at your natural waistline instead of your hips. This will help lengthen your silhouette thus making you appear taller.
  12. As well, cuffing your pants also breaks up the body lines and the long, lean silhouette you’re trying to create. If you can, hem your pants so you don’t have to cuff them.
