Going to the gym is essential; not only is it important for your physical health, but it’s also a chance to build social interaction with others, become more familiar with your body, and gain confidence and satisfaction through challenging work. Sometimes, getting ready for the gym can take just as long as your actual workout. Whether you’re generally unorganized or take too much time finding the perfect workout outfit, here are a few things to always keep on hand so you’re ready to go right out of the office, or out the door in a hurry on the weekend.

Gym Bag

The first thing you should consider is what you’re going to use as a gym bag. This is arguably the most crucial decision. You could use a large backpack, traditional duffle bag, or tote bag. The form of the bag will be whatever works best for you, just make sure it is large enough for the supplies you want to bring. Also, make sure the bag has some extra storage pockets for valuables like loose cash, car keys, and your wallet. With smaller pockets like these you’ll be able to quickly get to your keys or headphones when you need them. Look around your house for a bag that fits these criteria. There’s no need to spend a fortune on a new bag if you already have one. If the bag you have is free of holes and stains you should be good to go.

T-Shirts

How many t-shirts you pack is dependent on how many times a week you plan on going to the gym. For example, if you know you go the gym four times a week, pack four t-shirts. If your frequency fluctuates, pack one more than you’ll think you’ll need. This way you’re prepared if you happen to find some unexpected free time to hit the gym. Again, don’t break the bank on buying t-shirts for the gym. Sure, everyone likes to look stylish at the gym and wear the most recent prints from their favorite fitness brand, however there are plenty of more affordable options that work just as well. One of the best tips is to stick to neutral colors. Black, gray, white, beige etc. do the same for your shorts and everything with match, that way you can save time on coordinating your outfit.

Shorts/Compression Leggings

As for shorts, pack the same amount as your t-shirts and stick to a neutral color palette. Another option to wear though is compression leggings. Leggings might be better suited for the colder seasons but can also be appropriate year-round. Compression leggings are going to encourage blood flow, which helps to oxygenate your body during your workout. As a bonus, they also help to absorb sweat from your legs if you’re having a particularly intense session.

Sneakers/Socks

This is probably where you’re going to want to invest some money. You don’t have to go crazy, but a good pair of sneakers for the gym can be a lifesaver. Spending time and money on the correct pair of footwear for you is crucial. It’s going to save you from pain and frustration. Sneakers are going to be the one constant in your gym bag so make sure you’ve not settled for the second best. If you’ve stuck with a neutral palette for your outfit so far, your sneakers are a good opportunity to introduce some visual interest. You could go for a modern design, or bright colors to liven things up. In contrast, you can stick to a neutral tone again if you get easily bored of color. Luckily these days, there are plenty of options to satisfy your needs. As for socks, there’s not much to say. Get a pack of low cut ankle socks and for the sake of others, change them before each workout.

Extras
Extras could be anything you might need to complete the perfect workout session. Again, this will be entirely up to your own personal needs but here are a few ideas to get you started. A water bottle; you can put anything you like in it but staying hydrated is important for your health. Having a reliable bottle to fill is going to save you from making impulse purchases. Food, packing smalls snacks is also important if you take a break in the middle of your session or want something right after. Smalls nutrition bars work best because they’re small enough to throw a couple in your bag but provide the right amount of nutrition post workout. Headphones, this one is very important. If you like to work out alone, having a pair of headphones always in your gym bag is very important. Being able to listen to your favorite playlist is sometimes what pushes you to be able to finish that extra set, or run that last mile. Wireless headphones work the best and are a great investment, but working within your budget is most important.

Hygiene

If you’re not going straight home after the gym, I hope you take full advantage of the showers before you go somewhere else. Even if you shower at the gym there are still a couple products you’ll want to have with you once you’re done working out. First is deodorant. Something fresh and light is perfect straight out of the shower and will make you feel refreshed after a long workout. Sometimes taking the extra step is worth it, that’s where cologne comes in. Having a travel-sized scent packed in your bag is one of the best pick me ups after working out and changing in sweaty locker rooms. Something light but masculine will make you feel even better and put you back in the right headspace. Lastly, consider packing a spray facial toner. Even if you wash your face in the shower, a toner is going to further remove excess oil and sweat that has accumulated during your workout. This is especially helpful if you’re going to be seeing people after your workout. Packing these extra items might seem like a hassle but it’ll make a noticeable difference. The only clue to others that you’ve been hard at work in the gym is your toned body.

Sticking to these ideas is going to help keep you organized and ready to take on daily exercise. Having a bag full of essentials is useful so you can pack for the week, and take the bag with you to the office, or leave it by the door so you can grab it on your way out. Going to the gym daily is going to increase your confidence and boost not only your own, but others perception of you as a healthy and fit individual.
