Big red sale signs have a magnetizing effect on shoppers. You’ll be drawn to see what's on sale and at just how low of a price. But sometimes this can be a trap. When looking for bargains you don’t always want to think with your wallet but think practically. You don’t want to buy something on sale that you wouldn’t be willing to buy at full price. That ten-dollar shirt might seem like a great deal in the store, but it won’t seem so great when it sits unworn in your dresser. With that in mind, here are some tips and tricks for when you’re shopping on a budget.
First timing is key; store sales come in cycles. Sales will come before and after holidays and when towards the end of seasons. Typically, you’ll find the best deals after holidays. With current fast fashion trends, clothing needs to move off the shelves fast. Anything that doesn’t get bought will soon find its way to discount racks. So, it's important to figure out when your favorite store is getting in new stock, so you can take advantage of discounts on the old stock. If you see something you like, be patient- in a month or two it may go on sale.
Another trap in buying sale clothing is ending up with items of lower quality, or even sometimes damaged. Check the seams and evaluate how long they’re likely to stay together. Some stores will put returned clothing on the sale racks. Watch out for hidden stains or small tears that the employees may have missed. Also, be sure to check their return policy; don’t buy something you end up hating and can’t return.
And keep in mind a deal isn’t always a deal. Retailers have a host of psychological tricks they use to make impulse buys. Many stores will markup items only to bring it back down to its normal price during “sales”. Some will also discount items on the suggested price, not the actual retail price. Stores are strategically planned to get you to buy higher priced items. The farther back you go in a store the more likely you will find those deals you’re looking for.
One of your best friends in saving will be the internet. There are many websites dedicated to finding the best sales or finding coupons with the biggest percentage off. Sign up for email alerts to always be in the know when online stores have sales. Try leaving items in your cart; retailers don’t want to lose a sale, so they’ll often send you discount offers by email a few days later. Patience is key when collecting a low-cost wardrobe. Be diligent in looking for those hidden gems. Sometimes you won’t find that great bargain item until you’ve dug through the whole wrack.
And don’t just save these tips for the clothing store! Use them for saving at any store; grocery, jewelry, furniture, etc. There is always an opportunity to save and your wallet will be all the happier.
