Guide to Men’s Socks
Guide to Men’s Socks

Only a few years ago, it seemed that men’s socks were limited to black and white dress socks. Couple this with only a few options of suits to wear at the office, and you have an outfit that lacks a personality. These days however, the options are nearly limitless. There is a plethora of brands that offer many different styles of socks to suit your needs. You may be thinking there isn’t much to discuss about socks, but there is so much more to think about other than having a matching set for the day. The right style of sock can add just enough flair and color to an everyday office ensemble.
No-Show
No-show socks are perhaps the most versatile and casual socks to discuss. A well-designed pair of no-show socks will give you a sock-less look while keeping your feet comfortable and dry throughout the day. While the whole point of this sock is to achieve a look in which others believe you aren’t wearing any socks, you can still invest in a pair that are your favorite color or have a unique pattern. This way, you can retain a nice style while lounging around the house. In a more practical setting however, no-show socks are a perfect option for the most casual outfits like jeans and a t-shirt. As for shoes, no-shows will be most appropriate for low cut styles such as sneakers and oxfords.
Ankle
Ankle socks are often confused with no-show socks, and they are indeed similar, but still different. Ankle socks are cut slightly higher and can be partially visible. This style of sock is most suited for casual settings and mainly athletic wear. This style is meant to protect your ankles from chaffing during physical activity. Therefore, sneakers are the shoes best fit for this sock. Because they are mostly used when going for a run or working out at the gym, it may be a wise idea to purchase only black ankle socks or dark colors in general. The dark colors will stay cleaner looking for longer even when you’ve had an intense workout.
Mid-Calf
Mid-calf socks are maybe the most worn socks in an office setting. This style can be paired with almost any type of dress shoes and is a modern classic when wearing a suit. Mid-calf socks come in a variety of thicknesses, colors, patterns, and prints. This is your opportunity to add some of your own personality and style to a conservative suit. Because your trousers will cover them, they won’t always be seen but when they are, you’re sure to get a lot of compliments. Try going for a pair that is a bright contrasting color, or a fun and unconventional pattern. Even if you’re working in an office, you can still have fun and socks can be a small way to brighten your day.
Over the Calf
Over the calf socks are probably the most classic selection. This style is preferred if you absolutely want to make sure that your socks aren’t falling around your ankles throughout the day. Most of the sock isn’t seen and gives a similar effect to mid-calf socks. However, over the calf socks are much longer and sit right at the knee. Therefore, this style might be more suited for the winter months, or extra conservative occasions. When just working at the office or attending a networking event, choosing a pair of over the calf socks in a noticeable color or funky pattern is going to be very memorable.
While you may have previously thought socks were the least interesting part of fashion, you may have a better idea now that there is a lot more thought and effort that goes in to selecting the right pair. Like a lot of details in style, socks can be a way to express yourself to others and give them the perception that you’re a fun and interesting person who isn’t weighed down by a tailored suit. You can’t go wrong with a nice pair of socks to finish off your outfit. Also, think about the material the sock is made from and what situation it would be best suited for. Cotton is probably the most widely used material, but wool, synthetic fabrics, cashmere and even silk are available. Whatever you end up with, make sure it reflects your personality, and projects an image of how you want others to see you.
