WHAT DOES PERFUME DIFFUSION MEAN?

What Does Perfume Diffusion Mean?

Your Perfume Routine Might Never Be The Same After Learning About the Science of Diffusion

When perfumers talk about diffusion, they are referring to how the perfume’s aromatic compounds behave in the air. Diffusion is why you can smell somebody’s perfume when they walk by. This is also known as Sillage, referring to the aura or trail created by a perfume when it is worn on the skin.

It’s diffusion that moves a lightly applied scent from the wearer to somebody in their immediate area (or a heavily applied one from one side of the room to the other).

Alcohol: The Diffusion Driver

Perfumes and colognes are usually somewhere in the range of 80-90% alcohol. Alcohol drives diffusion. It’s a highly volatile substance, meaning it desperately wants to evaporate.

As the alcohol evaporates, it diffuses scent into the air. The molecules of the scented compounds mingle with the molecules of the air. Heavily applied scent will diffuse widely, filling a room. Lightly applied scent will only be noticeable when people are close to you.
With just the right amount of diffused scent, people will notice your perfume when they are standing close—and they’ll be drawn even closer. Too much and the smell is overpowering. Instead of drawing them in, you’ll be keeping them at arm’s length.

Diffusion Means We Are All Subject to the Cinderella Effect

When we apply our scent before going out, a great deal of the alcohol in the perfume evaporates immediately. Thanks to diffusion, we smell it in the air, but only for a minute or two.

What doesn’t immediately diffuse into the air around us lingers on our skin, but the heat from our bodies means that the alcohol in the mixture continues to evaporate, driving diffusion while it does so.

Thanks to diffusion, the people around us can smell our scent, but the sweet smell can’t last forever. Like Cinderella, we don’t have too long before the magic wears off.

Re-Applying is the Secret to Smelling Great All Day

Once the alcohol in the mixture has all evaporated, your scent is no longer diffusing into the air around you. This is why we should re-apply our perfume or cologne every few hours.

Keep a small bottle in your bag or purse for this purpose. Some people try to get around this by applying too much at the beginning of the day or before they go out in the evening. This is the wrong approach.

Your scent won’t last longer if you apply too much of it. It will just be stronger and will diffuse more widely—meaning that everybody in the room will be able to smell you.

Remember, you want to keep your smell close—like a secret you only share with those closest to you.
