Everyone should be flossing as well as brushing their teeth in their daily routine. Daily brushing and cleaning between your teeth are important because it removes plaque. If the plaque isn't removed, it continues to build up, feeding on the bits of food left behind and causing tooth decay and gum disease. Flossing gets rid of the excess food that gets stuck between our teeth that our toothbrush cannot reach. However, many people wonder if the alternative to traditional flossing, water flossing, is more effective or the same as traditional flossing.

Flossing

Traditional flossing consists using a thin piece of string that passes in between each tooth. The string gently scrapes up and down each tooth to remove plaque and food particles off the tooth and out from the gums.

Some advantages of traditional flossing include the following:
  •  It is a very efficient method of removing excess food off the teeth
  •  Floss is cost friendly and easily accessible from any pharmacy or grocery store
  •  Flossing is quick, easy, and portable since it can be done anywhere
Some disadvantages of traditional flossing include the following:
  •  Difficulty reaching some areas of the mouth with floss
  •  Sometimes can cause minor bleeding if not done frequently
  •  Sometimes can cause gum sensitivity

Water Picking

Water picking uses a specific machine that directs a stream of water into the mouth and gums. So, instead of scraping the teeth to remove plaque water flossing uses the pressure of the water to massage the gums and push the food away from the teeth.

Some advantages of water picking include the following:
  • A waterpik is easy to use for people with braces or other types of dental work that cannot use traditional floss
  • The massage action of the water jet can improve gum health and reach areas that can't be reached with traditional floss.
Some disadvantages of water picking include the following:
  •  A waterpik is expensive and costly
  •  You need space for storage since the machine is a decent size
  •  It requires access to electricity and water
  •  Waterpiks are not portable, so you can’t use it outside of your home
Overall, both methods are very effective for removing plaque and excess food from between your teeth and gums. You should use whichever method of flossing that works best for you and your lifestyle. Although you have the option to pick one one or the other method, you do not have the option to omit either option, since flossing is the key to healthy beautiful looking teeth.
