Unwanted Hair Removal Methods

Shaving may be one of the easiest forms of hair removal, but it isn’t always the best way, or even the fastest. Hair grows in varying lengths all over your body whether you like it to or not. Some of it soft and nearly invisible like the peach fuzz on your face, while other hair may be thicker, darker, and unwanted. But luckily there are many methods to removing this unwanted hair. Some are temporary, some permanent, and certain options will be better for removing certain types of hair.

Next to shaving, one of the most used methods is tweezing or waxing. But unlike shaving, these two methods will fully remove the hair shaft, not just cut it at the surface. Tweezing is great for smaller areas like your eyebrows or small stray hairs on your body. Be careful not to do large patches though, as it could damage the hair follicle or lead to ingrown hairs. For larger areas opt for waxing. It is great for areas such as the bikini line or upper lip. This option is better done professionally however, as hot wax could damage your skin.

Two more temporary options are threading or using electric epilators. Threading is like using tweezers, except it uses twisted threads to pull out hairs. This process is faster and gentler on the skin than tweezing but must be done professionally. Threading should also be used on the smaller eyebrow area; threading your legs could take a lifetime. However, for large areas like your legs you could try a similar process using an electric epilator. These small machines will grab and remove multiple hairs at once as it is run along your skin. Any manual plucking of hair will hurt, but this is one of your fastest options.

If keeping up on methods like these is too much for you, you can try more permanent options such as electrolysis or laser hair removal. These will be much more expensive, however if done right it can stop hair growth for multiple years or even permanently. Electrolysis uses a small needle that applies an electric current to the hair follicle, then destroying hair growth cells. The process is mostly painless; however, it could take multiple sessions to remove everything. Laser hair removal uses laser light to destroy the hair follicle. It is faster than electrolysis, however the laser is only effective on dark hair colors.

One last option are depilatories. These products come in many different formats such as creams or gels and are rubbed directly onto the skin. They use acids that break down the hair, so it comes easily out of the follicle. While they are pain free and fast, depilatories can be a bad choice for some skin types. Since they use chemicals, they can be likely to irritate sensitive skin or cause allergic reactions. If you’d like to try a depilatory make sure to test it on a small patch of skin first.

Regardless of what option you pick, how you care for you skin after hair removal is just as important. Some of the downsides of hair removal are skin irritation, ingrown hairs, or razor burn. To prevent this try gently exfoliating your skin before and after hair removal. Always keep any shaved areas well moisturized. Don’t use more pressure than needed when shaving, and don’t use too much force when tweezing. With exceptional care and diligence, you’ll be rewarded with smooth, shiny skin!
